One of the best things about summer is sitting out in the backyard with an ice cold beverage and throwing some steaks onto a hot grill. There is a warm breeze in the air, birds are chirping, life is good. Unfortunately, there is the potential for a below zero wind chill and your grill is probably frozen shut. However, there are the few brave souls, such as myself, that are willing to brave the cold and still get out there and grill some steaks. If you think you might be brave enough, then here are my suggestions to a successful winter grilling session:
- Position the grill close to your door. Chances are you aren’t going to want to stay out in the cold the entire time. Plan ahead and position your grill close to the door you’ll be going in and out during the grilling process. Just remember not to put it where it could damage your house.
- Add extra coals throughout. The cold air will quickly cool down your internal grill temperature so keep a section of your grill free for adding coals. For gas grills, be sure to have extra propane on hand since cold weather grilling requires more heat.
- Grill thermometer. Every time you lift the lid of your grill, you release precious heat from your grill which prolongs your entire cooking process. The solution: get a grill thermometer. These special thermometers are designed to fit under your gill lid and rest at the heart of your grilling food to measure the internal temperature. What’s even better, many of these thermometers pair with your phone and give you readings of how things are going from the comfort of your home.
- Use thin cuts when possible. Depending on what you’re cooking, it may be smart to butterfly your cuts of meat into thinner portions so they cook faster. Just make sure to adjust your cooking time accordingly so you don’t torch your food.
- Dress appropriately! Your food isn’t the only thing that needs to stay warm. Make sure you wear all the appropriate gear yourself. Gloves, boots, winter coat and so on.
Winter grilling is one of the best things once you’re done because it is that little taste of summer during an ice cold winter. So get up, gear up, and get grilling!
